I’m mainly here because the characters are likeable and there’s a robust fandom constantly churning out new artwork of all kinds. If it weren’t for all of the fan works, I wouldn’t have stuck around for more than one or two years.
It actually has an ongoing plot that changes. Not many cartoons had that before, with only around 2010 we got actual stories.
That is certainly true. The 2010’s in general are often described as a “renaissance” of sorts for western animation.
That being said, I think the growth and development of the characters over time adds a lot to the show and makes the ‘learning about friendship’ thing an actual meaningful theme instead of just a plot contrivance. Seeing characters achieve their goals is also satisfying.
In particular, I appreciate how Fluttershy became more assertive over time (early on her shyness was so extreme to the point of being downright contemptible, in my opinion) and how characters like Luna, Sunset, and Starlight whose backstories are largely defined by massive life-ruining failures found ways to learn from their mistakes without letting said mistakes define them.

The fact that it’s not just ‘Twilight in a village, has friends, wacky stuff happens, back to normal’. It actually has an ongoing plot that changes. Not many cartoons had that before, with only around 2010 we got actual stories. Others, however, generally had a big change every once in a while, while FIM changed all the time, not just in premieres or finales.

Oh and they had guts for some episodes. Perfect Pear is probably one of my, if not my outright favourite.

I liked the format of the show, and the fandom surrounding it. I loved the surreal humor of the Mentally Advanced Series, and the actual show reminded me of Smurfs. The ponys all live in a village and each one has a unique name and ability. While villains exist, they aren’t the focus despite the fantasy setting.

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
