Never heard of that one, but it does remind me of Lego Mars Mission! Rock Raiders:
The eponymous Rock Raiders were a team of miners that searched for energy crystals in the underground. They had several specialized mining and transport vehicles at their disposal, and were based at various locations around Planet U, where they processed rocks to extract the powerful Energy Crystals with their refinery stations. During their excavations, they would occasionally encounter Rock Monsters (included in two different sets), Slimy Slugs, and numerous other monsters, who would often attack the Rock Raiders or their bases, usually for Energy Crystals (although some, like Spiders and Scorpions, were merely aggressive towards the Raiders).
The humans are a group of astronauts that have journeyed to Mars in search of powerful yellow-green energy crystals found on the Martian surface. In the storyline, the humans are mining the crystals for a new source of energy, as Earth is experiencing an energy crisis. Unfortunately for the Astronauts, the Aliens are also seeking the crystals for themselves.
This theme had the coolest flash game on the lego website: an actual rts
>demo disc
Oh, demo discs. I remember those but the ones I got were usually for PC.
Anyway, I really do think this image does capture a certain innocence with the idea of legos like that.
@TheBridge
The last of the generic themes I can recall was Aliens (I actually had the saucer. Only “big” set I ever had) and Cowboys & Indians. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they probably don’t sell those anymore. Oh, and that mining-themed series. Rock-Raiders, I think it was called? I don’t really remember anything about it. Probably wouldn’t remember it at all if the trailer for a game based on it wasn’t included on an old Playstation demo disc I had and played into the dirt (grandia and soul reaver, among other things. It was a good one).
What else was there? I remember Octane. A sort of general “vehicles” theme. Cars, helicopters, etc. Oh, and police.
@Officer Hotpants
I was at the tale end of the generic themes like this. I suppose some might say I was in a golden age of a few very strong generic sets while franchise and storyline themes that had more “soul” or something. Bionicle! These sets though feel like a certain essence of lego that was pure, non franchise fun that has been really been lost recently from what I know of the sets and such.
@TheBridge
I miss those old sets. Pirates & Islanders, Aquanauts, Ice Planet. I still think of Aquanauts whenever I’m gathering quartz in Subnautica. I wonder if that was an inspiration…
This is so cute! It’d be really cool if this is a reference to the old old lego pirates line with cool stop motion in commercials.
