Sir Boops-A-Lot
So first off: Would there be people interested in a smaller scale campaign?
World-ending stakes and stories about saving the world are nice, and I do like the catharsis in playing them. But they also take time to write, and tend to have something of a foregone conclusion, cause if you didn’t save the day the campaign setting would just end. >.<
So what about a smaller story? Maybe your characters are drawn into a little factional conflict centered around a small fortress on the wild frontier? Or perhaps something inspired by the Goblin Slayer anime, where your characters deal with a kind of monster most people in civilized lands consider to be just a nuance and you have the difficult, thankless task of letting them continue to think that…
Or, if the players don’t mind playing more evil characters, then I can accommodate. Maybe a band of slavers struggling to pay the rent, and having to strike more daring capture targets out of desperation. Or the party could be senior members of the honour guard of a corrupt nobleman, ruthless in their approach to keep their liege alive one more day in the cutthroat world of politics.
A smaller campaign like this serves a few purposes: It gives me time to work on a larger story, while also keeping the consequences significant for the PCs, but also objectively rather insignificant. The benefit of this, is to make the failure state more feasible, and thus more authentic. If the players know that the world will go on even if they all mess up as horribly as they possibly can, then it makes failure more real. I have less reason to “cheat” to allow the players victory.
If you’d be interested in that, let me know…in the meantime I’m gonna have a nap. When I’m back I’m gonna start talking about some crazy worldbuilding ideas I had.
