Ponybooru Moderation Feedback

Anonymous #297F
Personally I don’t really buy into the whole “character owners get to decide how other people are allowed to draw them” idea. If someone doesn’t like a piece of art they should use filters. But I’m not going to fight it if it is a rule on this site.
The site rules as they are now don’t really suggest that this is the case however. The only rule that would come remotely close to applying here is rule 9, which only covers “Direct interactions between users”. I’m not sure if someone publicly posting an image containing a character you made counts as a “direct” interaction. It’s not really targeting you specifically.
Based on all of this I would like to suggest the following changes:
  • It should be clearly written into the site rules that oc owners get to decide if an image containing their oc stays up or not (either a new rule or maybe merging it into the list of conditions in rule 1?)
  • The rule should apply to everyone equally
  • The deletion reason or mod log should reference that rule

This is a reply to all the previous comments/posts. The image is back up, however I formally asked the artist to take it down. If you want to call what I did mod abuse go for it.

Part of what bothers me about it all, is this. I couldn’t place my finger on why I brought this up? But that’s because when someone does something contradictary to what they have done in the past, I don’t remember what they did right away hakf the time.
Does this same curtosy extend to regular users?
^ This.
Kind of important.
Where have we seen this before? I remembered. It took me a hot minute to find it, but here it is.
This image, as I was told, was literally drawn because they don’t like the person whose Sona this is, know that she hates Nazi artwork, and did this to make her uncomfortable.
100 percent malicious intent. Is what I was told.
And they let it stay.
But, when it’s the Mods’ OCs…

So this rule, the one about not using someone else’s OCs in a way that makes them uncomfortable, only applies if it’s something the staff would find uncomfortable were it their OCs, not whether the OC’s owner finds it uncomfortable?

I think it would be fine to have a rule like “do not use admin’s OC in way they don’t like”.
The problem is that there is apparently secret rules that are not included in those listed on the site.

It’s not a rule zaknel, that’s why I put the image back up and asked the artist directly to take it down.
If a rule does come out of this, then of course it would apply to every user on the site.
Did I overstep my bounds? Yes, I can admit that. However I think this image goes a little further than a simple joke image

The exact words of the moderator that described the situation with >>2858016 were thusly:
My exact words were
Was it done to deliberately make someone uncomfortable? That’s what I am trying to figure out.
And their response was
Definitely
xppp definitely didn’t do this as nice gift art that was unfortunately misinterpreted
he knew what he was doing
I, Personally, think that that, too, goes a little further than a simple joke image.

No, I read it. And it is a good improvement.
I just find it off that you can jump in and use your admin powers for this. I rather would prefer the idea that there was some sort of system to prevent that kind of behavior from happening in the first place.

You mean this?
I consulted all moderators and the owner of the website before I deleted it and we agreed that removing it was justified

If you are wondering, after reading what was said here, I went back and reassessed and we found it a better option as per our rules to bring it back and ask the artist themselves to remove it. If he doesn’t, then it remains

>the rest of the site staff agreed with me, so it’s okay
Not the defense you think it is…
Look, I’m not unsympathetic here, but this being a special staff privilege that us plebs don’t get is straight-up a two-tier system.

Just wanted to say thank you for admitting this and putting it back. I can understand that it must not be a great feeling. I know admins of some other sites that would not do that.
I didn’t expect my simple request for clarification to end up this way but I am glad to see rules being consistently enforced.
I still disagree with wanting to delete art out of principle. But if the artists agrees to your request and wants it taken down then I see no issue.

Man, this surely make us remember how vulnerable can be the staff of any image site at the time of abuse their power when the feelings or anyone in the staff get hurts in personal levels. I just say this look more like a test to show when a site can be close of committing another derpibooru and by the comments of the staff I assume the uploader itself was the uploader of such picture. I just hope the level of hostility toward the artist don’t escalate because if this was the reaction toward the picture itself I don’t want to imagine the hostility if the staff get ghosted or a “no” as answer. Not much for acres, I can see him just ignore it and continue with his life but more for the other administrator that looked really upset to a level that he don’t look like he would be able to do a rational choice.
btw, this part of a comment in the previous page also show how the staff circle have a different approach
“I consulted all moderators and the owner of the website before I deleted it and we agreed that removing it was justified”. In other words is fine to play without someone else OC but when an OC of the staff is touched all the moderators and owners will not have a little doubt of acting in favor of their buddy, because like he mentioned, everyone in the moderation staff agreed that pic needed to be deleted.
If anything I just say that acres did the right choice by allowing the picture to stay and waiting for the artist to make the choice, I just hope he act like this if he get a no as answer.

I’m an outsider here, but I have to say, this looks like a remarkably healthy and productive conversation.

For the record: Not all staff were participants of Acres’ consultation. Of those that participated, all were in agreement. Not all of us agree with the initial course of action of manually removing the image; that being said, later discussion has revealed that more staff are in agreement that asking the artist to issue a takedown is an appropriate course of action.
As this has sparked discussion, a potential new rule is being considered to cover this sort of shituation, that would apply to all OCs, with the caveat being that certain requirements are met (i.e. actually being the owner of the OC, the image depicting something “offensively out of character”). Formal wording, and likely implementation is still being thought out, however.

In other words no one in the staff considered this until they get their own OCs “attacked” and this will only be implemented because someone in the staff got their feeling hurt?
I guess they’re just blending the rules just in case shinodage say “no” to remove the picture, even if that means have to moderate a lot of older pics that will cover this issue.
