Ninjas were historically referred to with native japanese name “shinobi” (忍び) or more fully “shinobi no mono” (忍びの者).
Later, this phrase was abbreviated and read in borrowed from chinese way as “ninja” (忍者).
This only became a common name after World War Two.
The pronunciation of “ninja” was borrowed into many european languages.
The spelling of (忍者) was also borrowed back to chinese. In standard Mandarin it’s pronounced “rěnzhě”.
