Bio: Mellow Vibes is just as his name describes. He is a calm, soft-spoken, laid-back pegasus. Well, when your parents are the flower-power couple of the decade, what else is to be expected? Called Mel for short, this lanky stallion has a soothing, peaceful demeanor most of the time. Easy to get along with, Mel took a page out of his Aunt Fluttershy’s book, and is deeply kind and caring. His smile alone can relax even the most tense pony. He has a deep affinity and appreciation for the earth and world around him. He’s not exactly as “into” the hippie lifestyle (most namely the dialect) as his dear parents, but this pony’s ideal day is relaxing at a spiritual hot springs then stargazing after a bonfire with lots of singing. “Our hippie” is a permanent face amongst the Athenaverse crowd. He and his cousin Athena have been close since birth, and he sort of got caught up in her friend group via osmosis. His best friends are Jetstream and Tourmaline Quartz. Jetstream saved him from a river when he was a very young colt and the two became inseparable ever since (while Jet insisted on teaching his friend to swim). He appreciates Jet’s laid-back demeanor, although his sarcastic remarks can get a little grating at times. Nevertheless, he enjoys picking up at him with Tom (who’s sass is unrivaled). He has a very strong bond with many of his friends, although he is incredibly close with Ophelia Moon. Mel’s current occupation, and special talent, is art therapy and creating various pieces of art, like wind chimes, paintings, and the sake of his cutie mark, dreamcatchers. He hosts a small art class in the Ponyville community center, which doubles as a lighthearted therapy session. Mel deeply believes in releasing bad energies through one’s creativity, and his serene demeanor creates a calm environment for struggling foals. He’s sat through many an angry outburst over fighting parents, or tears over a failed test they worked so hard on. This pegasus is a deeply empathetic and emotional fellow, and is always open to hearing about whatever crisis somepony (and sometimes, somecreature) is going through. Its hard not to pour your heart out to such a non-judgmental, willing ear. Mel carries many “please never tell” kinds of secrets around with him, although he has a few of his own. Mel deeply believes in his philosophies of respect for the earth, self-love, free love, and inner peace. However, he can sometimes stray from his own doctrine. Deep down, to the furthest corner of his very chakras, Mel harbors a dark cloud of self-doubt. He will pace for hours, playing over and over the last thing he said to a foal and how his words can possibly effect the little ones. Its his biggest fear that it will one day take a negative effect on the foals he tries to help. He tends to overthink things until he’s driven himself to tears. No other pony in the world knows about Mellow’s struggle in this. He knows that, helpful or not, ponies still count on him. So its up to him to try again and hope for a better tomorrow. His family and friends, however, aren’t as oblivious as he thinks. Dawn Star can easily recognize the signs of anxiety, dealing with something very similar herself. Athena and Ophelia merely treat their friend as they always do, and often provide their own versions of support without being obvious about it. His mama Treehugger (who isn’t as dim a bulb as some of town thinks) can sense her son’s unbalanced chakras and will invite him to her meditation bungalow for a little calming yoga. Jetstream remains oblivious. Relationships: Mel is very fond of his easygoing parents. Treehugger runs a yoga clinic in their backyard, while his father Zephyr Breeze is an up-and-coming (though unconventional) mane stylist. They can be flighty at times, but they dote on Mel in their own unique ways. Treehugger taught her little blossom to feel the spirit and power of the earth around him, how to connect with his land. He is really and truly at peace when he is immersed in nature - lying by a thundering waterfall, or visiting his beloved Aunt Shy’s Sweet Feather Sanctuary. He feels very close to his Ma. While her constant, dreamy drawl and certain aspects of her vernacular/mannerisms can get a tad grating, Mel listens with rapt attention whenever she articulates her connection with the world. Though he misses her on the spiritual retreats she takes, she always is sure to send him several mental messages on how much she misses her little star child. Mel does love Zephyr, who insists on being the only pony to touch his son’s mane (“no, young man, you may not have dreads like your mother.”), but he can be a little embarrassed of his dad, who constantly tries to be the “cool dad” all the kids love and want to hang out with (sadly that title got passed to sometimes-rival Cheese Sandwich). This pegasus is very close to the other side of his family - Aunt Shy, Uncle Dizzy, and his cousin, the ever-excitable Athena. The two have been close since they were in diapers, and were practically raised together. The two have a brother-sister relationship, and were often found in each other’s houses after school. All (okay most) of the parents didn’t mind having their niece/nephew over for a bit, and always made sure to provide snacks. The exception is Discord. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot seem to rile his nephew one teensy bit. He is so much like his mother, its frustrating on a level even all five million dimensions couldn’t comprehend. Mel thinks its funny. He often gets swept up into Athena’s many adventures, but doesn’t mind. Since she, too, was raised alongside Athena, Mel has an amicable relationship with Dawn Star. One interesting relationship dynamic is the one he has with Ophelia Moon. He had noticed the small filly shortly after she moved to Ponyville. She hadn’t been here long, but he had never seen her with one other pony besides her parents. She was always walking straight towards the forest after school. One day, Mel attempted to follow her, but quickly became turned around in this unfamiliar part of the forest. He stumbled upon a small little grotto, in which a flock of several different birds resided. A few appeared alarmed, but they all seemed curious about him. Careful not to spook them, Mel could only watch in wonder as the birds fluttered around and napped. Several quiet moments passed before a flurry of gray feathers and white hair came hurtling towards him. A stocky little mare confronted him, demanding in a…weirdly lovely, husky voice, how dare he scare her birds, how did he find this place, and if he were to ever tell anypony about this - Mel, despite being rather terrified, kept calm and explained that he was just curious as to where she was going after school every day. He had seen her in town, but she was always alone. Ophelia tells him she needs nopony, and demands he leave again, when her pet magpie Jade takes a sudden liking to the stallion - though the bird is just as cautious as her owner. Though initially suspicious, Ophelia allows Mel to stay, and he finally gets a good look at her - she’s tiny for her age, but her coat…it sparkles, almost like silver. Her mane is white as a star, and her eyes as as deep as a galaxy. Mel is pretty much enamored from then on out. He spends nearly every day with Ophelia now, and the two have an easygoing, emotionally intimate relationship. She seems to soften around him, and he simply cannot help the way his heart jumps just that teeny bit when he’s around her. But that’s one of those “don’t ever tell” secrets. Mel knows the hard time Ophelia has had. He doesn’t want to land a whole other bag of raw and rather deep emotion on top of the tough pony. So that particular secret gets buried deep, deep, deep down never to be touched. Too bad somedraconequus has the shovel.
