Moondancer has always had very vivid dreams and was so self-aware in them that they were like an extension of the waking world. Sometimes she would even confuse dreams and reality. It was terrifying living through crystal clear nightmares and being blindsided by random events in dreams.
However, whenever she told other ponies, they simply said “it’s just a dream, calm down” and went about their business. So she kept quiet about it, and other things as well.
Then she got accepted into the prestigious School for Gifted Foals, and the stress levels that came with being around others raised to 10. She got great grades on paper, but she spoke in quick, mumbly, confusing ways. She couldn’t give presentations without freezing up or answer questions when called on despite knowing the answers. Maybe she was stupid after all and this was all a mistake. Why did the real world have to be so hard?
Then there was Twilight, who was just as shy, just as good as her, but was able to articulate herself perfectly and brush off the stares anypony might give her. Moondancer quickly came to admire her and her resilience, how she made being an outcast seem so cool…
So one night Moondancer sleeps, wishing nothing but to be friends with Twilight, who was an outcast among even kids her age. Both she and her read the same books, they both preferred knowledge over socializing, they always got the highest grades in class… why was it so difficult to become friends?
And that’s when she sees it. In the clearness of her dreams, she sees a hazy opening. She decides to check it out, and pushes herself through it into a blurry realm of subconsciousness where she sees Twilight Sparkle herself, immersed in a hazy world. Moondancer happily joins in, not sure if this is an extension of her own dream, but being with Twilight is fun so she’s not going to ask questions.
The next morning, Moondancer wakes up with her cutie mark, a testament to her lucid dreaming and dreamwalking abilities. It’s… everything she could have wanted and more. This was such a perfect way to make friends without the struggle of social interaction. Being at school was so boring and easy anyway, how could anyone truly form a bond here? THIS was the ideal way to live!
Ecstatic, she tells Twilight about her cutie mark the next day, and thanks her for her help. Twilight simply nods awkwardly and continues about her business. Which is fine. They don’t really need to talk, after all. She can just think about how the interactions would go, and it would be just as real.
After that incident, she was very excited to go to bed and live out her ultimate dreams and soon she got the hang of controlling the world around her. Playing with all the toys she wanted, going to the magical lands in the books she read–she was living the ultimate foal fantasy.
And better yet… meeting Twilight.
As the nights continued, it was easy to learn more and more about Twilight. She had a baby dragon…? And an older brother training in the guard! Wow, dreams were such amazing tools to look into the minds of others…
Despite all the fun Moondancer and Twilight would engage in within the dream realm, Moondancer would be the only one making memories. Twilight would never remember any of the dreams, and if she did, she didn’t tell Moondancer.
Because they never talked in the waking world. Not unless it was for school reasons, like passing the other a piece of paper. Moondancer would sit sorta near her at lunch, but Twilight never noticed. They never hang out outside of class, unless it was for a birthday party, but Twilight went to every classmates’ birthday party because her parents forced her to. To be honest, she barely realized Moondancer existed.
But to Moondancer, Twilight was her best friend.

FIRST OF ALL, this is not the “this is gonna change everything” post 😭 that will come hopefully a few days from now
The dream world is a very important element of the Gamiverse to say the least. Every creature is connected to the dream world in some way since every being has magic. This is why it’s possible to have shared dreams or travel through them like in the show. Everything is connected.
For example: The tree you saw is a distorted version of a real tree somewhere! And that random pony who served you ice cream in your dream is actually somepony somewhere across the world whose dream is overlapping yours. You will probably never even meet them in your lifetime.
Discord himself lives in the most hectic and nonsensical part of the dream world. His physical form and *soul are fused into one, hence why creatures like him and Suave can travel through between the two worlds. This is how Suave saved Daydream, essentially by separating her soul from her physical body.
So, lucid dreamers are very rare, as this means they are capable of not only being aware but controlling what is essentially the metaphysical embodiment of their consciousness separate from the magic soup of the dream world that is every being on earth combined.
Moondancer becomes more and more aware of the power she holds as she ages. Despite it, ponies still don’t like her in the waking world despite her acts of heroism in the dream world. She doesn’t seem to leave an impression long enough to even have anypony say “hey, I saw you in my dream last night.”
Whatever. It’s fine. Nopony is worth her time, anyway. She’s so much more powerful than them (and even being kind enough to hold back!) and nopony even knows it. She’ll drown herself in the dark arts, the stars, the legacy of Nightmare Moon and so on… and end up writing a scientific paper that will get her blacklisted from the academic space and attract the attention of her future wife.
*When I say soul, a soul it is the culmination of magic and consciousness attached to a physical individual, letting that individual dream and perform magic. If a soul is removed from a body, it doesn’t kill the host. (Hence Daydream.) Death only comes when the physical body that the soul originated from is no longer capable of functioning, destroying that soul’s tether to the physical world. I’ll go more into this in another post down the line. LOL
