I run into this GM problem ALL the time.
“Um, are you sure you’re not mad? We can do this your way if this is causing problems for you.”
“No, I’m just playing up my frustration because you seem to enjoy that. I’m totally, 100% cool rolling with this.”
But again, communication and checking in are important.
DM: On your way out, Celestia arranges for a package from the Canterlot Archives to be delivered to you. In an accompanying scroll, she instructs you to keep it safe and not look at it until you’re ready, “for even simply reading it may trigger its potent, unfinished magic.”
Rainbow Dash: All this buildup and it’s gonna be “I prepared Explosive Runes today,” I guarantee it.
DM: You know I have a rule about that. Strictly once per campaign. Anyway, it arrives by the time you are ready to board the train to Ponyville.
Pinkie Pie: Question! Can we take the hot air balloon instead?
Rarity: Probably not the worst idea. The trains are mostly likely still transporting refugees.
DM: You’re not wrong. I had a whole bunch more descriptions planned where you see how packed the trains are, full of sad ponies. It was going to tug at the heartstrings. But go ahead, take the hot air balloon.
Twilight Sparkle: …You sure?
DM: Sorry, I laid the deadpan on too thick. This course of action actually makes sense. You’d be able to see that the train station was very busy. It’d be reasonable to take a more direct route that doesn’t use up precious space for others.
Twilight Sparkle: Why don’t we take this vehicle all the time?
Fluttershy: Wings, probably…
Pinkie Pie: And you wouldn’t BELIEVE the parking!
DM: You float down to Ponyville, crossing over the threshold of the magical barrier keeping Discord’s dimension-warping power contained. Space ripples and whooshes around you. You know that any number of strange, dangerous, unbelievable versions of Ponyville await you. But the one you find is… ideal. It’s normal. All the buildings are in their right place. All the ponies you know are going about their normal business. The sun is shining. The breeze is perfect. Everything is bright and vibrant and happy.
Twilight Sparkle: This is the worst. Anyone else wanna try again?
