I’ve been playing a lot of Planet Coaster lately—really terrific game. I can wax poetic all day about how well the game captures and fosters an endearing, childlike sense of creativity. But I want to put a spotlight on the game’s soundtrack:
You, Me, & Gravity. Relaxing folk-rock is not a genre that one would think goes well with a roller coaster game. But that is because the soundtrack is not music that is played while
riding the roller coaster. It is played when
constructing the roller coaster—it is designed to place the player in a psychological flow state, especially in the realm of creativity. The music is a lubricant, so to speak, allowing the player’s ideas to flow easily from their minds and into their dream parks.
This juxtaposition of soothing music with roller coasters—things designed to trigger an adrenaline rush—is easily something that is reflected in Twilight Velvet and Night Light’s relationship in my fanfic series (and is hinted at in canon; remember Velvet’s antics in “Once Upon a Zeppelin?”). Her thrill-seeking and his stability and serenity complement each other, coalescing to create this perfect storm of an idea.
Just in time for Hearts and Hooves Day too!
While you’re here, if you want more Night Light and Twilight Velvet (but mostly Velvet), check out my fanfic
Spectrum of Lightning ! It recently got featured in Equestria Daily and I’m hoping to have something else created for it in commemoration for that achievement.
