Friendship Is Magic: The Next Generation begins thirty years after the birth of Princess Flurry Heart, and the story is… a bit darker and more complicated than My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic before it. It delves into the backstory around Alicorns, where they came from, why Discord is the only Draconequus, and who is the prisoner in the deepest darkest cell of the cosmic oubliette that is Tartarus…  
(And admittedly, FIM:TNG does take some liberties with the events of MLP:FIM, mostly in regards to Equestria Girls and all episodes after and including The Cutie Re-Mark. That will become more apparent when it comes to the character bios for Sunset Shimmer, Flash Sentry, Starlight Glimmer, and others.)
 
We have here Pumpkin Sweet Apple, age 10, the only child of Apple Bloom & Snails. They live on Sweet Apple Acres with their parents, their cousins Shamrock and Piñata Apple, their uncle Big Mac, their aunts Applejack and Sugar Belle, and their Great-Granny Smith.
 
Pumpkin Sweet has not found their cutie mark yet, although they may be quite close. Pumpkin is their cousin Piñata’s pupil in pastries based in produce. They yearn to produce an apple-pumpkin pie, certain that it will be all the rage when they get their hooves on the right pumpkin.
 
Much like Piñata, Pumpkin has quite the round physique to them. They absolutely love any sort of foods that have fruit in them in any capacity. As such, they’ve been quite crafty at slipping into Shamrock’s orchard to try out some of their biggest cousin’s apple-works. (Much like how their father and uncle both ended up sticking their noses in the wrong cave and nearly got Ponyville flattened by an ursa minor.)
 
Pumpkin Sweet is, as their mother Apple Bloom would describe them, a “sweet little pumpkin”. They are very eager to please anypony around them, and this usually comes about from trying to provide foodstuffs of some sort. Unfortunately, this usually results in Pumpkin taking food that isn’t theirs to give away, and though their heart is in the right place, they still have to face the music when this occurs.
 
Whether they were born as a filly or a colt is strictly on a need-to-know basis. Pumpkin Sweet Apple identifies as neither, preferring to be an agender foal. For as long as they lived they had known Piñata as a stallion, and only learned he was assigned filly at birth when they came out as nonbinary. He supported them in their exploration of self-identity, and they share a relationship maybe more like brother and sibling than simply cousins. And though many would think this would be terribly confusing for their father Snails, strictly out of an assumption that he is dumb, the fact is that he does not care what anybody is as long as they’re nice. Of course, Apple Bloom supports their foal’s identity as well.
 
Pumpkin Sweet’s coat color comes from their uncle Snips’s mane color, and their freckles color comes from their father Snails’s coat color. Their mane color comes from Braeburn’s coat color. Their eye color comes from the shell on their father Snails’s cutie mark. The design of their mane and tail comes from when Grand Pear was much younger, and their muzzle and cheeks take inspiration from Snails and Snips respectively.
 
Apple Bloom & Snails knew each other for as long as they both attended Ponyville’s schoolhouse, and their relationship just slowly… started to happen. He’d begun to help out around Sweet Apple Acres more and more, simply because he happened to wander out to the farm on any given day. His skill at buckball also impressed Apple Bloom, who used this as further proof to Rumble that cutie marks did not necessarily preclude one from activities unrelated to said cutie mark. By the tenth anniversary of the Cutie Mark Day Camp, they were special someponies. And though it would be another five years before they officially married, it would be foalish to think that it was because Snails was slow or mentally challenged. Slow to respond and often speaking in a simpler tone than most, certainly, but his heart was in the right place in all matters and he wanted to be certain that being wed was what Apple Bloom wanted, and that a child was what they wanted when the time was right. Really, who else could Apple Bloom ask for?
