“Cherry Bliss?”
Cherry was startled, sitting up and wiping his tears. “You,” He uttered with a hiccup. “I-I’m sorry.”
“I take it she didn’t like the flowers?”
“She didn’t like me.” Cherry whimpered. “Well she said she liked me, but not like that and…oh…”
“I see.” Sentinel sighed and took a seat beside him. “I know, let it out.”
“Why does it hurt so much?”
“It has to hurt. That’s how you know it means something. But you either keep wallowing in your own self pity…or you suck it up.” She wiped his tears. “Life is like that. I’ve dealt with similar feelings.” She paused, remembering a certain unicorn colt from boot camp.
“What happened?”
“Same thing as you. Didn’t like me the same way, wanted to stay friends…” Sentinel sighed. “It was painful. I couldn’t even face the brigade again…but it turned out good because I became a florist and I found out I enjoy it more. Sometimes you’ve got to rip the bandaid off, and let go. It’ll take time, but it’ll be good in the long run.”
Cherry nodded, smiling slightly. “I ..didn’t even get your name. I feel silly.”
She grinned back. “Sentinel Shield.” They shook hooves and laughed together. They soon enjoyed the silence before Sentinel spoke up again. “I’m sorry if I’m harsh. I just…don’t like seeing you suffer. You deserve better, Cherry Bliss. And maybe she wasn’t right for you, but maybe there’s somepony out there that’ll be there…”
Cherry stood up. “You’re right. You’re a good friend, Sentinel.”
Sentinel hid behind her bangs self consciously for a moment. “Call me Sen. All my friends do.”
Cherry nodded. “Sen. I’ll keep looking for my one true love!” He galloped away, waving to her.
She smiled, though this time it was forced. “I’m sure you will, Cherry.”
She was used to this. She was a friend, a shoulder to cry on. For once she wanted something more, but for now, she would have to stay put. She was better with flowers anyway.
