“It’s easy to forget, because it revitalized a multimedia juggernaut, but My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was a bit of a gamble. It was much more in line with the first generation of MLP, but pretty different from the more recent gens, and seemed pretty far from the accepted wisdom of what a show marketed at girls is supposed to be. The peripheral fanbase was a bonus, but it really did succeed at its intended goal of making little girls interested in the MLP brand again.
Basically, I’m saying I personally think it’s understandable why someone might take a pony game and give it a more ‘marketable’ make-over for a group of newcomers. Especially someone more risk averse than our DM proper.”
Transcript:
Twilight Sparkle: [text] Congratulations, you’re a small dog now.
DM: [text] What?
Twilight Sparkle: [text] Apparently your friend has made a few…significant changes to the game’s setting. To help the players get a bit more acclimated to the game.
Twilight Sparkle: [text] School setting. Level 1. Humans only. No mythical creatures. Except mature teenagers, I suppose.
DM: [text] Really? That’s…a lot more changes than I was informed of.
Twilight Sparkle: [text] And you want to know the best part? I’m a wizard in a world with no magic.
DM: [text] So you’re a nerd? What’s different?
Twilight Sparkle: [text] Bold words from the person who made a pastel pony paradise.
DM: [text] Touché. Need an escape hatch?
Twilight Sparkle: [text] Not yet. Who knows, maybe a fictional high school won’t be terrible.
DM: [text] Bold words…
Twilight Sparkle: [text] Hush you.
