His Fate

A hoof tapped against the front door, setting down three gentle knocks against the wood. Fluttershy clopped down the hallway then stopped before the door, before briefly observing the silhouette behind it. The family had to be careful with potentially unknown visitors, Chrysalis’ location couldn’t be revealed to the public, it wouldn’t be safe for her or the kids.

The figure tapped again. Fluttershy watched a little longer before she finally had the confidence that this was who she thought it was. She flicked open the lock with the tip of her left wing. Her face lit up.

“Fluttershy!” Sunset Shimmer grinned eagerly, bringing her friend in for a hug. Fluttershy returned the hug, giggling softly. She pulled away, her smile not gone.

“Sunny, I’m so glad you were able to come! I- I hope it wasn’t too much of a bother,” her eyes awkwardly diverted Sunset’s gaze.

The merigold coated mare playfully nudged Fluttershy as she came in, “not at all, Shy! Mudbriar was able to babysit the girls, and the doctor says I need some exercise anywho!” Sunset chuckled lightheartedly.

Flutters followed behind her friend, “I’ve been meaning to ask, have you and the others decide on any names yet for your little angel?” She gestured to Sunset to head into the living room.

Sunny took the hint, turning into the room. “I’m not even 3 months, but we have been considering a few, I can’t give any spoilers however,” she smirked, slowing over to the carpet. “Enough about my family though, let’s get down to the reason you called me over.”

The pair took their places on the red carpet beneath them. “You were told about the baby, right?” Fluttershy questioned. The mail birds were good at their jobs, but letters and the such can get lost during delivery sometimes.

Sunset’s eyes widened, that reaction alone made it clear that there was a mishap. “Bab~~!” Fluttershy pressed a hoof against the unicorn’s mouth. “We’re not pregnant.” She said bluntly.

She withdrew her hoof. “Last night we found a baby on our doorstep, Chryssie’s currently out getting him checked up. I wanted you to come over to lend us a hand with deciding on what to do.”

“A picture of him should have come to you but I assume that wasn’t received?”

Sunset shook her head.

Fluttershy looked around the room then reached out her wing towards the beanbag set against the wall. She picked up a small turned over photo with the tips of her wing, bringing it over to herself. “I have one here, just in case you didn’t get the whole letter”

Sunset Shimmer snatched it out of Flutter’s grasp with her magic, as soon as she set her eyes upon the picture, she squealed. “AWWW! How cute! Look at his widdle nosey wosey, he’s absolutely adorable Flutters!”

The mother of three cleared her throat, Sunset peered up at her, “ah, sorry..” The photograph levitated back into Fluttershy’s wing.

“We’re just having a lot of trouble deciding on what to do..” Fluttershy began. “There would be a reason for him being left on our door at such a late hour, but what if he was put there to cause problems?

“Like, what if a bitter ex dropped him off here to get back at somebody? Or if a drunken parent left him here without thinking?” Fluttershy’s wings and chest fur flared as did her anxiety.

Sunset chirped in to try calm down her friend, “why not call EFPS? Or report it to the police?”

“That could risk putting him in danger, Sunny! We have no clue where he’s come from! If not here because of a parents’ spite, he could be here because a parent could no longer take care of him, or that his household was abusive and a parent or sibling brought him here in hopes of a better life for him!”

“Oh! Sunset please help us!” Tears welled in Flutter’s panicked eyes. “I~~ I don’t know what to do! I don’t know what would be the right thing to do! I’ve never known this to happen to anybody before. I don’t trust EFPS, you know how they are with non-pony children, especially hybrid children”

Fluttershy hid between her risen wings.

A wall of silence fell between them as Sunset pondered. “Maybe.. adopt him? He was given to you specifically for a reason, no matter if it’d been out of spite or to protect him, he wouldn’t be safe going back to wherever he came from either way,” she shrugged. “It’s just a thought, but it may be the best option.

“You have experience with being a mother already, and you know how to take care of animals very well. I could get Twilight to make it official that~~”

Fluttershy cut in, “she’d be abusing her powers as a queen then! And it would be unfair, she’s never done that for anybody else! Oh dear”

“Shy, nopony can stop my wife from abusing her powers, she’s not doing it evilly anyway. It’d be a benefit to the baby, and Twilight doesn’t have to announce it to everypony. She can just write it as being official and that’s it! Besides, taking in doorstep children is nothing new to our culture.”

Was Sunset, the wife of the Queen, honestly suggesting stealing a child?..

Well, it wouldn’t really be stealing since the baby was left at Fluttershy’s own doorstep, and Starswirl knows what that child had been through already.

“I.. I suppose he could be happier here… I’ll talk it through with Chrysalis and the kids, see what they want” Fluttershy nodded, “thank you Sunset”

I’m sorry the writing’s so sloppy but I wanted to get this out as soon as. I’m sorry I stalled so much on this, but at least the next piece is out now for you all to wonder why this was a train wreck and why you wasted time waiting ha. Also I know the drawing looks odd, I’m not used to drawing light scenes, and the sketch for this was done awhile ago while I was still developing the style
