I do think in general that the players should feel like they can ask the GM to help with actions, choices, and descriptions. A more competitive, adversarial dynamic puts up walls and forces the players to either become their own rules lawyer or flounder helplessly, while a cooperative table lets everyone get a chance to succeed at what they want to do.  
 
That said, it’s hard to resist the allure of an open-ended outcome…

DM: The moment you exchange one-liners, Tirek’s tall horns begin to gather arcane energy to try and drain your magic. But you still have a chance to get away.  
Fluttershy: Oh! Um, actually… Is that fair to Discord? He didn’t really get a chance, and he’s a powerful being like Twilight is now…  
DM: Y’know what, you’re right; I didn’t really think about that, sorry. What’s the play here, old friend? Does Twilight have to struggle harder to get away from Tirek? Is it almost impossible?  
(beat)  
Discord: <sigh> No, your instincts are correct here, as ever. I– Discord really thought he was safe. Twilight is under no such illusion.  
Fluttershy: Okay. Just wanted to make sure.  
Twilight Sparkle: Glad we got that all cleared up. I am OUTTA here. Don’t even particularly care where.  
DM: Oh, really…?
