Competent NPCs live in a strange little realm. Players love NPCs that are just capable enough to take care of themselves without being babysat. On the other hand, NPCs that are a little too competent can sometimes make the players feel like their actions don’t matter.

Apple Bloom: Well-
Applejack: That’s quite enough outta you, Bloom.
Apple Bloom: Uh… okay.
Applejack: Zecora. You’ve been workin’ on this cure yer whole life, right? You’ve done a bunch of bad things and told yourself, “It’ll all be worth it.” We’ll let you do just that – make yer cure, and then face the consequences. ‘Cause it’ll still be worth it, right?
