I think it comes from the fact that there’s been no clampdown here. It might just be my rose-tinted glasses, but Derpi, for all the flaws it had (and there were many) was at its high point before the forums were implemented. Users would carry on discussions, roleplay, writefag (summoning Clopficinthecomments!), meme, shitpost, derail, argue (cough guilty cough), go off on tangents (cough omegaguilty cough), whatever, while expressing opinions through tags. It was the culture of the site.
Then, after forums were added and quite literally forced down everyone’s throats in the name of “ease on moderation staff”, tensions rose as nobody knew when they could post a comment without being screeched at to “take it to the forums”, while the forums themselves felt no more moderated than the comments. But the culture was broken.
Here it feels, well, like it used to be. Users are allowed to have fun, and staff appear to be having fun right along side. It certainly makes this oldfag feel at home (now we just need a new Roboshi favoriting everything and a new Carlos-grade punner).
I’m really just happy that people can enjoy a fun meme while being civil about it. Ponybooru may not have a huge community base, but it’s turning out to be pretty fun regardless.

That would make an amazing individual option: Replace “Featured Image” with “Featured Shitpost”, and have it pick from the tag randomly every day at UTC 0000.

Originally the intent was picking the old beautiful obscure images on derpibooru that didn’t get much attention at the time of posting. Obviously, it changed to whatever nowadays there.

All of the featured images are supposed to be safe as a rule, aside from maybe apr 1st shenanigans, and it pushed the boundaries too much for some. some also clammored about it being an oc of one of the mods and the third image featured from that artist. I can’t remember if the image was safe or not, but those are the types of arguments I rememeber seeing in the commenst section aside from gay/trans/whatever bad.

If I remember correctly, some of the drama was regarding cross dressing or trans or whatever it was.
But a good chunk was also the fact that it was a moderators OC that they had commissioned and a lot of people felt it was wrong to push something like that to the forefront of the site as opposed to a number of other incredible works posted in that same time frame. Basically “nepotism” in a form.
That was probably after the time they featured an image of an anthro stallion in a dress. It caused a storm of negative feedback and they responded with a temporary impromptu rule about not using downvotes to protest the featured image. I’m guessing that’s probably when they switched over.
Personally, I didn’t get it. Considering Derpi’s collective lust for futa pegging, I don’t see why that was a step too far.

Yep, it was a mod nominated thing. It was originally just mod suggested and nominated, but they opened a forumn thread a few years back to allow some user suggestions IIRC.
I’m friends with hatter. he was happy to see it in the 3 day scoring thing on the left. be willing to bet this made his day :P the previous version was “to the tumblr” “abandon the tumblr”
From what I’ve heard from mods, members of site staff would nominate images and then vote to pick which one should be featured, or something like that. Personally I’m cool with shitpost-a-day, featured images on Derpi were almost always boring bronybait images.
