The Witch of Love
My take on Princess Cadance for the mlp 1920s au! I’ll post my progress for her design as well ✨️
As a big fan of romantic art and 20s glamour, Cadance was a lot of fun to design. I referenced women who were considered traditionally beautiful in the era and added a few touches to help her still resemble her show counterpart. I also used some elements of Greco-Roman art to reference the Crystal Empire, a setting that is heavily inspired by art under that category.
Her dress is a mixture of design elements I enjoyed in 1920s wedding dresses (Puffy veils, ankle length skirts, capes with long trains, and layer, layers, layers) as well as my own personal touches. The dress silhouette is based on a historical garment called the Robe de Style, a style that married (hehe) the tube shaped dresses of the 20s with the hoop/pannier skirts of the 18th century. The colors are definitely a personal decision rather than a historical one, as I find white a bit boring and a colorful dress seemed more appropriate for a magical royal wedding. The dress is meant to resemble a bouquet overflowing with roses. The rolled fabric flowers are taken directly from Michelle Clapton’s costume design in Game of Thrones, specifically the wedding dress worn by Margaery Tyrell. It’s one of my favorite costumes in TV, and I thought the flower train would be the perfect touch of fantasy and elegance to add to Cadance’s wedding dress.
The main thing I wanted was to unite dated historical elements with fantastical ones. Other details include a Crystal Heart necklace, peonies, and a whole lot of pearls for extra 1920s glam.Bixels wanted to reference Sleeping Beauty in the wedding arc, and I feel like adding that influence to her design made her look a lot more magical and fairytale like. I hope you all like the designs we made for A Canterlot Wedding cause it’s definitely one of my favorite arcs in the original show.
